
The Maggio Musicale Fiorentino which began in 1933, became one of the first musical festivals in Italy founded by Vittorio Gui. Gui was an Italian conductor and composer. In 1937, the opera festival became a biennial event and since has been annual event.
Today, the annual opera festival event held in Florence Italy, presents contemporary and forgotten operas for opera lovers in visually dramatic productions.
The Maggio Musicale Fiorentino is truly an international opera phenomena. It includes four operas, concerts, ballets and exhibitions. The oldest opera festival in Italy takes place during the months of April, May and June, but other events throughout the year.
Music has long played an important role in the life of Florence. In fact, the very first operas performed in Florence date back towards the end of the sixteenth century. Italy’s strong love of operas and ballet is driven from a deep history and appreciation of the art.
The Maggio Musicale Fiorentino opera festival is performed at the Teatro Comunale. Designed in 1962 by Telemaco Bonaiuti, the Teatro Comunale can seat up to 2003 people. Patrons enjoy large stalls and two-wide, semi-circular galleries that make up the impressive amphitheatre.
When the first opera was performed during the festival, opera lovers were presented one of Verdi’s early productions, “Nabucco.” His full name was Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi, and was one of the most influential romantic Italian composers and spent his time performing around the world’s best opera houses.
The Maggio Musicale Fiorentino has gained international status and is one of the most important Italian opera festivals around the world. The productions are seen by thousands of visitors every year, and are visually dramatic.
The opera festival is a harvest for opera lovers who enjoy the basic cultural choices along with many of the greatest conductors. A sampling of the conductors include: Maggio Musicale Fiorentino festival with Vittorio Gui (founder of the festival), as well as Dimitri Mitropoulos, Wilhelm Furtwngler, Bruno Walter, Zubin Mehta, von Karajan and Muti. Zubin Mehta is also the current conductor and Paolo Arc is the present Artistic Director of the festival.
The Maggio Musicale Fiorentino 2010 program will include a host of quality ballet and opera productions. The opera performances include L’italiana in Algeri (The Italian Girl in Algiers) by Gioachino Rossini, The Cunning Little Vixen by Leo Jancek, Il campanello (The Night Bell) by Gaetano Donizetti and Adriana Lecouvreur, based on the French actress Adrienne Lecouvreue (1692-1730) by Francesco Cilea. The ballet performances that are set to bring another year of success are the revered Don Quixote and Carmen Suite.
